Extreme and slow onset events of climate change are posing severe threats to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh. Poor and vulnerable people are mostly affected by climate change impacts, such as floods, droughts, cyclones, storm surge and other extreme and slow onset events. Thus, a solid understanding of climate change impacts, policies and actions is imperative to ensure mainstreaming and better aligning climate action in terms of both, resilience building, climate disaster risk reduction, and emission reduction across policies, programs, and socio-economic sectors. The training on ‘Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation’ is designed to reflect the international state of the art in climate science, climate policies, and practical experience gained on the ground that will strengthen participants knowledge base and sharpen their professional profile.

• Have understanding on Climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation actions in livestock, fisheries, water, forestry and biodiversity sector

Course content:

The course is structured into four modules, which consist of face-to-face sessions, excursion and e-learning materials.  It will provide thematic knowledge as well as equipping learners with methodological competences. All modules reflect state-of-the-art concepts and new issues in order to better understand the complex relations and interactions between changing ecosystems and social structures and processes at local, regional, national, and international levels.

Module 1: Climate Change Science, Scenarios & Disaster Management

• Climate Change Science: Climate Change, Global Warming, Greenhouse Gases and Consequences, tipping points of global ecosystems
• Climate Change scenario based on IPCC 6^th Assessment Report
• Climate Change impacts and vulnerabilities
• Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and climate change
• Climate change and Bangladesh: Climate Risk Index, sectoral impacts of CC

• Disaster management: Basic understanding on Disaster terminology i.e. hazard, disaster, vulnerability, exposure, capacity & risk
• Understanding Disaster Risk Reduction and Disaster Management
• Linkage (comparative discussion) between climate change and disaster

Module 2: Loss & Damage, Climate finance, Climate Change & Disaster policies/frameworks, Resilience and Gender

• Loss and damage: Conceptualize L&D, dimensions, policy and litigation perspective, UNFCCC decision on L&D at COP 27 and Bangladesh govt. standpoint.
• National and international climate finance: Prospect, progress, governance and challenges, national and international climate finance scenario, how to access climate funds
• National and International climate change policies/frameworks: Synopsis on UNFCCC, Major COP decisions; Synopsis, current state, gaps and alignment with national development - NDC, NAP, BCCSAP, BDP2100, ccGAP, Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan (MCPP), 8^th five year plan (2020-2025) and Perspective Plan (2021-2041)
• National and International disaster risk reduction policies/frameworks: Synopsis on UNDRR, Sendai Framework, Disaster Management Act, Policy, SOD, regulatory framework and National Plan for Disaster Management (2021-2025)
• Resilience Building: Understanding climate resilience, comparative discussion between adaptation and resilience, resilience components, different resilient building frameworks working in Bangladesh, Community resilience building: features, discussion and frameworks
• Gender & Climate Change: Gender based vulnerabilities and impacts of climate change, understand how climate change is a human rights and social justice issue, Gender integration in Climate change projects

Module 3: Climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation actions: Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Water, Forestry, biodiversity and Renewable Energy

• Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: Concept and options of adaptation and mitigation, policies and framework in the context of Bangladesh
• Agriculture sector: Impact of Climate Change on agriculture and food security- global and Bangladesh (zone wise) context, GHG emission from agriculture sector, planning and policy gaps, technological solutions, adaptation and mitigation options in Bangladesh and beyond.
• Livestock sector: Impact of Climate Change on livestock, GHG emission from livestock sector, planning and policy gaps, technological solutions, adaptation and mitigation options in Bangladesh and beyond.
• Fisheries sector: Aquatic system overview, climate change vulnerability and impacts in fisheries sector, planning and policy gaps, co-management systems, adaptation and mitigation technologies.
• Forestry and biodiversity sector: Global and national context, role of forestry for adaptation and mitigation, carbon storage and sequestration potential of forest, policy gap and way forward.
• Water & waste sector: Impact of climate change on water, geological and geographical context of water management, community water governance, water & waste management technology.
• Renewable energy (RE): Current energy mix of BD and beyond, environmental impact, key policies, market trends, future prospects of RE, linkage between RE and SDG, private sector engagement in RE, role of key stakeholders.

Module 4: Understanding Climate change and disaster beyond the classroom, Resilience building, and Renewable energy

• Tour to climate vulnerable area, Shyamnagar for five days to explore and internalize the impacts of climate change and gain first-hand experience on how people are becoming resilient in that area
• Visit Climate Centre- A unique climate solution centre in South Asia

Course methodology:

The training course will provide participants with a sound understanding and innovative way, presented by a group of highly professional lecturers and trainers. They represent a unique mix of leading academic experts on the topics they teach, experienced practitioners, and young, highly-talented ‘out-of-the-box thinkers. The training method include Introduction to the topic, expert presentations, interactive exercises, reflection on relevance topic, honorary lectures by distinguished speakers, field visit, topic-wise assessment, standardize evaluation mechanism.

The training is designed for professionals working in the field of climate change, agriculture, food security, natural resources management, forestry, rural development, sustainable development or other relevant areas from development sector, university and institution, research organization, governmental officials, private sector, media and other development sectors.

The total duration is 15 days in consecutive 3 months.

First Term: 08 January – 12 January, 2023

Second Term: 05 February – 09 February, 2023

Final Term: 12 March – 16 March, 2023

Venue: Hope Foundation, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh and Shyamnagar, Satkhira.

Course Fee: This is a fully residential training. The total cost of the training is BDT 100000 per participant. CCDB will provide 75% scholarship. Therefore, each participant’s contribution is only BDT 25000.
