Solar Desalination Panel

place

Solar desalination panel is a technique that produces fresh water from saline water. This technology utilizes solar radiation to evaporate saline water in a special panel which condenses the vapor to collect fresh water.

Benefit for the User:

  • Low-cost environment friendly technology
  • Provides clean drinkable water
  • Filter or chemicals free technology
  • No electricity required
  • No special skill required to operate
  • The same panel can be used for rain water harvesting by adding a simple outer channel
  • Improves water security and reduces water borne diseases.

Contribution to Climate Change Adaptation:

  • Easy adaptation technology for coastal vulnerable communities to get drinkable water from saline water sources
  • Does not emit greenhouse gas.

Regional Feasibility:

  • Saline prone areas like Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Barguna, Patuakhali etc.

How to Prepare:

For solar desalination, a glass panel is placed on the top of a plastic panel keeping some space between the two. A black fabric is placed over the plastic board connecting the saline water flow. The panel is always tilted towards the sun. Evaporated water condenses in the glass panel. Fresh water is collected from the bottom of the glass panel and waste water is drained out from the bottom of the plastic panel.

Cost:  BDT 20,000- 25,000 to prepare a panel (6 ftx3.5 ft or 1.8 mx 1.06 m) with a stand.
