Floating Rice Cultivation

place

Floating rice cultivation is a technique in which rice is grown on rafts to adapt to floods. The raft is made with a mixture of sawdust, rice husks, and rice bran instead of water hyacinth and floated on the water using GI chain link nets and PVC pipes.

Benefit for the User

  • An environment-friendly agricultural option
  • Water-logged land can be brought under rice cultivation
  • It does not require a plow

Contribution to Climate Change Adaptation

Climate change could lead to the unavailability of agricultural land and increased flooded land. Floating rice cultivation could be an option for this type of land to ensure food security. This also reduces GHG emissions and sequesters carbon as farmers do not need to burn the straw.

Regional Feasibility

This technique can be used in all wetlands and flood-prone areas.
