Cultivation of Vegetables Using Vermicompost

place

Vermicompost is a type of organic fertilizer. To produce vermicompost, Earthworms are kept in a mixture of kitchen waste, cow dung, or perishable materials.

Benefit for the User

  • Vermicompost contains a higher percentage of both macro and micro-nutrients than the garden compost
  • Enhances plant growth
  • Suppresses disease in plants, increases porosity and microbial activity in the soil

Contribution to Climate Change Adaptation

Vermicompost significantly reduces the use of chemical fertilizer that emits GHG. Essential in both drought and saline-prone areas because it enhances the water holding capacity of the soil.

Regional Feasibility

Everywhere in Bangladesh, especially in dry and saline-prone areas like- Rajshahi, Naogaon, Satkhira, Khulna, etc.

Cost

BDT 300-400 (Cost of Ring) and

BDT 2/per earth worm

(Can be produced under any type of suitable shade where an earthen bowl or concrete ring may be placed. In the beginning, only ring and earthworm cost is required. After that the price of cow dung is the only recurring cost.)
